How to Register Your Children in School as a Newcomer Checklist & Tips

Registering your children in Ontario schools can feel daunting especially when documentation is required. The good news? The system is designed to help newcomers adjust smoothly. Here’s everything you need to know to get your child enrolled quickly and easily.

Free Public Education for Newcomers

All children in Canada regardless of status have the right to attend public primary and secondary school (age 6–18). Even temporary resident children can register, though some boards may charge international fees

Required Documents Checklist

To register your child, you typically need:
• Proof of age (birth certificate or passport)
• Proof of guardianship (if the child lives with someone other than a parent)
• Proof of residency (utility bill, lease, bank statement)
• Immunization records from a doctor or public health unit
(Some boards like Toronto District School Board may also request PR cards or refugee claim papers)

Optional but Helpful Documents

• Report cards or school records (especially if your child attended school before)
• Baptismal certificate (if enrolling in a Catholic school)
• Custody documents, if applicable

School Board & Enrollment Process

1. Use your local school board’s “School Finder” tool to discover catchment-area schools
2. Contact or visit the school to begin registration
3. Attend an intake appointment bring all documents
4. Complete an assessment to place your child in the right grade and language support, if needed

Placement & Support

• Elementary students may undergo testing in English/math for grade placement.

They Cannot Deny Registration

Attendance is mandatory and not conditional on immigration status. Even refugee claimants’ children have unrestricted access to school. Schools cannot demand SIN or OHIP card for registration.
